This thought-provoking stage play takes place in the ragtag circus of theatre, where a charming ringmaster parades a freak show of passionate people and their disturbing monologues. When the theater begins to crumble and the show spins into bloody chaos, the ringmaster must tell his own tale to regain control of the performance.

I first had the pleasure to read this play around 2004 while it was being shopped around Los Angeles and I couldn't get it out of my head. To this day I think this is one of the most thought provoking character explorations I've ever read. How can one begin to explain what you are in for?
Technically, what you are witnessing is a modern day freak show but you substitute the Wolfboy and the Siamese Twins for people who look normal on the outside but show you their grotesque nature by the stories of their personal experience. What is truly frightening is that most of the people you meet are sympathetic and you can relate and understand them for the most part... but then they turn on you. It makes you question how far normal and abhorrent really are.
The only other theatrical experience I can equate this to is the musical "Assassins" where your protagonists are deeply flawed and force you to understand that even the most disgusting elements in society have roots in all of us.
I'm going to be frank here, this play isn't for everyone. It's dark, it's violent, it's disturbing. A lot of people simply won't allow themselves to go along the journey. But if you do you come out on the other end of it with a profound revelation about human psychology. The people who do "get it" will really be passionate about it. I don't think there is a middle ground here. Personally I am a huge fan and would see this anywhere it was mounted. It's one of my favorites of all time and I read A LOT of plays.
Do yourself a favor and pick up this gem.
As for what an actor will get out of this, mind blowingly amazing monologues with such rich and challenging characters you could work on them for a lifetime and still not get all the subtle nuances they contain. If you like villains and enjoy a good challenge in making them 3 dimensional you have a crazy fascinating playground.
Seriously, no review is going to prepare you for what you are in for so it's best just to get the ting and make up your own mind about what this work is about. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

The Passionates eBook Dave Ulrich Reviews
I was fortunate enough to direct a reading of this play in Los Angeles. When I first read the script - and I read a lot of scripts - it immediately jumped out at me for a number of reasons. It is extremely theatrical, which makes it very enticing to hear out loud and put up on stage. Dave also has a wonderful way with language - the script can be evocative, powerful, cutting, humorous, and moving, often all at the same time. The best plays are those that work on many levels - they're not JUST funny, not JUST dramatic, not JUST theatrical, but will punch you in the gut as you're crying with laughter, and this is one of those. The actors and I had an incredible time working on the play and I sincerely hope it reaches a larger audience, both as a written script and as a live production!
